I love BBC stuff and this is no exception. Their revisions are reviews for children before they take tests. It’s a nice way to introduce or revisit a topic. Beware – the kids may tell you things are spelled wrong. It’s a good chance to talk about the difference between British English and American English. And…to discuss some chemistry.

One more really good BBC link. These games are about mammals. And I would make a really lousy chimp because I had trouble remembering how to respond to the different chimps. It’s a little complicated. I’d take notes and use a cheat sheet as I went through, but you don’t have time to check it. You’ve got to decide what to do when that chimp comes up to you and you’ve got to do it quickly. They’re all pretty good activities that can be used in the classroom.

Another extremely cool BBC site. This one is strictly about sea life. All sorts of things to do. I’ll warn you that matching the young critters with their parents is tough. I had trouble doing that in Tank Turmoil. And Friend of Foe didn’t work out too well for me at first. Matching up which two organisms would be happy as “roommates” was a little difficult for me. But then, I was trying to do it with a two year old running around me, too!

This site I had trouble deciding where to list. I ended up creating two categories for it, just because it’s true focus is the prehistoric period, but most of it is about the organisms of the period. The BBC has way too much stuff sometimes. Sorting through it all gets a bit overwhelming, but well worth the effort.
This has several really good activites. I’m not terribly fond of Big Al because I’m way too cautious when I’m a dinosaur. I don’t want to get eaten! And once I chose to stay close to mom and she ate me. Not good. I couldn’t get past level 2 because I wasn’t brave enough to eat bigger things so I couldn’t grow very quickly. And just as you find in real animals, the bigger you get, the less energy you derive from eating smaller organisms. Lots of good lessons there.
The only one I couldn’t run was The Baryonyx Mystery. You have to be in the United Kingdom to do that one. Oh, well. There’s still plenty to do here!

Space – Games and Quizzes

I find myself picking sites apart, finding the best of what’s there. It makes life easier in the long run because it limits search time, but for now, I get lost in all of the fun things there are to do.
This space site is another part of the BBC. From here, you can locate all sorts of cool information. But since our focus is on things the kids can DO or you can do together in class, I chose here. Besides, I liked the games. Asteroids and Space Invaders are old games most of us played years ago. But the Space Doctor and Fanstastic Voyage are my favorite. Space Doctor you have to keep a crew safe on a mission to Mars. Fantastic Voyage is looking at different pieces of literature – H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, etc. – and deciding whether their plans for space travel were feasible.

Though these are for students ages 7-11 according to their site, they still work for older students. I’ve used them several times for different things and the kids always think they’re neat.
